    ------ WARNING! ------

The spring of the recoil spring assembly is compressed under several tons of force.

Do not attempt to compress or release the tension of the spring with the nut on the end of the retaining rod.

Damaged threads on the retaining rod or nut can cause the assembly to come apart with force, resulting in injury or death.

Note: Prior to assembling the recoil spring assembly, make sure that Tooling (A) is on a level surface.

    ------ WARNING! ------

Personal injury can result from being struck by parts propelled by a released spring force.

Make sure to wear all necessary protective equipment.

Follow the recommended procedure and use all recommended tooling to release the spring force.

  1. Check the condition of the threads on rod (8) and nut (6). If the threads are worn or damaged, use new parts for replacement.

  2. Check the inside of support assembly (9). Make sure that the support assembly is clean and free of dirt.

  3. Assemble the recoil spring assembly loosely.

  4. Install spring (10) in support assembly (9). Install rod (8) and support (13). Install washer (11) and nut (6).

    ------ WARNING! ------

Personal injury can result from being struck by parts propelled by a released spring force.

Make sure to wear all necessary protective equipment.

Follow the recommended procedure and use all recommended tooling to release the spring force.

  5. The weight of the recoil spring assembly is approximately 280 kg (617 lb). Attach a suitable lifting device to the recoil spring assembly.

  6. Put the recoil spring assembly in position on adjustable supports (1) in Tooling (A).

  7. Adjust the adjustable supports to align the centerline of the recoil spring assembly with the centerline of Tooling (A).

    Illustration 6g00498781

Note: The suitable lifting device has been removed from the recoil spring assembly to provide a better illustration of level gauge (4).

  8. Put a level gauge (4) on the recoil spring assembly.

  9. Reposition the recoil spring assembly until the recoil spring assembly is level. Reposition the recoil spring assembly until the retaining rod and nut (6) are centered in the hole in reaction plate (2).

  10. The recoil spring assembly is leveled by moving adjustable supports (1) higher or lower.

  11. After the recoil spring assembly is leveled and centered, install pins (5) on the back side of reaction plate (2), as shown.

  12. Install Tooling (C) on Tooling (B), as shown.

  13. Operate Tooling (B) to hold the recoil spring assembly in position between the reaction plate and the movable plate.

  14. Make sure that the recoil spring assembly is level and centered in Tooling (A).

  15. Remove the suitable lifting device. Close the covers on Tooling (A).

  16. Compress the recoil spring assembly with Tooling (B).

  17. Open the covers on Tooling (A), and measure the assembled length of the recoil spring assembly.

  18. Measure Distance (X) from the end of rod (8) to the face of support (13). Dimension (X) is the assembled length of the recoil spring assembly. Refer to Table 2 for correct recoil spring lengths.

    Table 2
    Recoil Spring Length
    Model  Spring Length  Socket
    336E  870 mm (34.25 inch)  4C-4471
    336F  870 mm (34.25 inch)  4C-4471
    568FM  1060 mm (41.73 inch)  386-3228

  19. If the assembled length is not correct, close the covers on Tooling (A), and adjust the spring length with Tooling (B).

  20. If the assembled length is correct, install washer (11) and nut (6). Tighten nut (6).

  21. Apply Tooling (D) on the threads of bolts (14). Install strip (12) and bolts (14).

  22. Attach a suitable lifting device to the recoil spring assembly. The weight of the recoil spring assembly is approximately 280 kg (617 lb). Remove the recoil spring assembly from Tooling (A).

End By:

  1. Install the recoil spring assembly.
