416E, 420E and 430E Backhoe Loaders Visual Inspection Caterpillar

Visual Inspection
`

------ WARNING! ------

Sudden movement of the machine or release of oil under pressure can cause injury to persons on or near the machine.

To prevent possible injury, perform the procedure that follows before testing and adjusting the brake system.

----------------------

------ WARNING! ------

Escaping fluid under pressure, even a pinhole size leak, can penetrate body tissue, causing serious injury, and possible death. If fluid is injected into your skin, it must be treated immediately by a doctor familiar with this type of injury.

Always use a board or cardboard when checking for a leak.

----------------------

NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "AVSpare Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on AVSpare products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

A visual inspection of the hydraulic system components or the steering system components is the first step in identifying a problem. Lower the implements to the ground. Lower the stabilizers to the ground. Stop the engine.

You must release pressure in the system within a few seconds, before the accumulator loses pressure. Perform the proper Testing and Adjusting, "Hydraulic System Pressure - Release" procedure for your specific type of machine.

Perform the following inspections:

  1. Check for damage and leaks on the following items: oil lines and the connections for the steering system, oil lines and the connections for the backhoe, oil line and the connections for the stabilizers and oil lines and the connections for the loader

  1. Check the pilot valves for leaks.

  1. Check the control valves for leaks. Look around the line relief valves and the cut off relief valve.

  1. Check the pump, pump controllers and connections for damage and leaks.

  1. Trace the pump lines to the tank and valves. Check the lines for damage and leaks.

  1. Check the oil cooler and the tank for damage and leaks.

  1. Check the hydraulic oil level. Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual for the proper capacity.

  1. Use a clear, new bottle or a container to get an oil sample from the tank, immediately after the machine is stopped. Check for air bubbles in the oil sample.

  1. Remove the filter element and check the filter element for particles. A magnet will separate ferrous particles from nonferrous particles. Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual for the correct procedure.
