Conditions Which Generate This Code:

"CAN Datalink" connection for the "Machine Security System Key Reader"

This diagnostic code is associated with the "Ignition Key Reader". This diagnostic code is recorded when the Machine ECM does not receive expected information from the module for the key reader over the data link.

Before performing this procedure, inspect the harness connectors that are involved in the circuit. Poor connections can often be the cause of a problem in an electrical circuit. Verify that all connections in the circuit are clean, that all connections are secure and that all connections are in good condition. If a problem with a connection is found, correct the problem and verify that this diagnostic code is active before performing this procedure. In addition, check the status of the LED indicator for the security system on the machine. If the security systemLEDis on, the security system has not accepted the key that is being used to turn on the machine. (Consult the Featuressection of the manual for more information.)

Note: The following test procedure may create other diagnostic codes. Ignore these created diagnostic codes. Clear any created diagnostic codes after the original diagnostic code has been corrected.

Test Step 1. CHECK THE "AVS ET DIAGNOSTIC " SCREEN.

  1. Check the "AVS ET Diagnostic" screen for a communication error between the Machine ECM and the "Key Reader" module.

Note: The diagnostic code for the key reader is CID 1960 FMI 09.

Expected Result:

The "AVS ET Diagnostic"screen reports that the CID 1960 FMI 09 diagnostic code is active, or the diagnostic code has been logged by the machine ECM.

Results:

  • YES - The "AVS ET Diagnostic" screen reports that the CID1960 FMI09 is active, or the diagnostic code has been logged by the machine ECM.

Repair: Troubleshoot the connections of the CAN data link between the module of the key reader and the machine ECM.

    Proceed to Test Step 3.

  • NO - The diagnostic code has NOT been logged or the diagnostic is NOT active. Proceed to Test Step 2.

Test Step 2. CHECK FOR POWER TO THE "KEY READER" MODULE.

  1. With the key start switch in the ON position, check for system voltage between pin 1 (wire 308-YL) and pin 2 (wire 202-BK) of the module for the key reader.

Expected Result:

The voltage that is measured is approximately system voltage.

Results:

  • YES - The voltage that is measured is approximately system voltage. The voltage is correct. Proceed to Test Step 4.

  • NO - System voltage is NOT present. The wiring harness has failed.

Repair: Check the wiring harness for signs of damage. Repair the machine harness or replace the machine harness.

    STOP

Test Step 3. CHECK THE CAN DATA LINK WIRING OF THE MACHINE HARNESS FOR AN OPEN CIRCUIT.

  1. Disconnect the J2 harness connector from the machine ECM.

  1. On the "Key Reader"side of the harness, install a jumper wire between pin 3 and pin 4.

  1. At the J2 of the machine ECM, measure the resistance between pin J2-67 (wire F711-GN) and pin J2-68 (wire F712-GY) of the connector for the machine ECM.

Expected Result:

The resistance is greater than 5000 ohms.

Results:

  • YES - The resistance is greater than 5000 ohms between pin J2-67 and pin J2-68. The wiring for the "CAN link" between the machine ECM and the"key reader" module is NOT correct.

Repair: Check the wiring harness for signs of damage. Repair the machine harness or replace the machine harness.

    STOP

  • NO - The resistance is less than 5 ohms between pin J2-67 and pin J2-68. The wiring is correct. Proceed to Test Step 4.

Test Step 4. CHECK THE CAN DATA LINK WIRING OF THE MACHINE HARNESS FOR A SHORT TO GROUND.

  1. The wiring harness connector for the "Key Reader" module and the machine ECM remain disconnected.

  1. The jumper wire remains installed.

  1. Measure the resistance between pin J2-67 (wire F711-GN) of the connector for the Machine ECM J2 and frame ground.

  1. Measure the resistance between pin J2-68 (wire F712-GY) of the J2 connector of the Machine ECM and frame ground.

Expected Result:

The resistance is greater than 5000 ohms.

Results:

  • YES - The resistance is greater than 5000 ohms. The resistance is correct. Proceed to Test Step 5.

  • NO - The resistance is less than 5 ohms. The wiring harness is shorted to the ground.

Repair: Check the wiring harness for signs of damage. Repair the machine harness or replace the machine harness.

    STOP

Test Step 5. CHECK THE CAN DATA LINK WIRING OF THE MACHINE HARNESS FOR A SHORT TO + BATTERY.

  1. The wiring harness connector for the "Key Reader" module and the Machine ECM remain disconnected.

  1. The jumper wire remains installed.

  1. Measure the resistance between pin J2-67 (wire F711-GN) of the connector for the machine ECM J2 and + battery.

  1. Measure the resistance between pin J2-68 (wire F712-GY) of the connector of the Machine ECM J2 and + battery.

Results:

  • YES - The resistance is greater than 5000 ohms. The resistance is correct. Proceed to Test Step 6.

  • NO - The resistance is less than 5 ohms. The wiring harness is shorted to the + battery circuit.

Repair: Check the wiring harness for signs of damage. Repair the machine harness or replace the machine harness.

    STOP

Test Step 6. CHECK THE TERMINATION RESISTORS OF THE CAN DATA LINK FOR AN OPEN CIRCUIT.

  1. Locate the plug for the "terminator resistor" of the CAN data link. Remove the plug for the "termination resistor" of the CAN data link. Measure the resistance between pin A and pin B.

Expected Result:

The resistance is approximately 120 ohms.

Results:

  • YES - The resistance is approximately 120 ohms. The resistance is correct. Reinstall the "termination resistor" plug.

Repair: Ensure that you have the latest version of software for your specific machine and ECM. Refer to the Testing and Adjusting, "Electronic Control Module (ECM) - Flash Program" section of this manual for the correct procedure.Turn the disconnect switch to the ON position. Turn the key start switch to the ON position and verify that flashing the ECM has cleared the problem. If the diagnostic code is still present after flashing the latest software to your ECM, contact the Technical Communicator for your dealership for possible consultation with AVSpare. This consultation may greatly reduce repair time. If the ECM requires replacement, see Testing and Adjusting, "Electronic Control Module (ECM) - Replace".

    STOP

  • NO - The resistance is greater than 120 ohms. The termination resistor has failed.

    Repair: Replace the termination resistor.

    STOP
