Introduction

This Special Instruction contains information of the procedure of removing and installing the front structure and required Cat Grade Control calibrations. If the front structure needs to be removed and installed, then grade control calibration is required. Follow the procedure described below.

Do not perform any procedure in this Special Instruction until you have read the information and you understand the information.

Safety Section

------ WARNING! ------

Do not operate or work on this machine unless you have read and understand the instructions and warnings in the Operation and Maintenance Manuals. Failure to follow the instructions or heed the warnings could result in injury or death. Contact your Cat dealer for replacement manuals. Proper care is your responsibility.

------ WARNING! ------

Personal injury can result from hydraulic oil pressure and hot oil.

Hydraulic oil pressure can remain in the hydraulic system after the engine has been stopped. Serious injury can be caused if this pressure is not released before any service is done on the hydraulic system.

Make sure all of the work tools have been lowered to the ground, and the oil is cool before removing any components or lines. Remove the oil filler cap only when the engine is stopped, and the filler cap is cool enough to touch with your bare hand.

NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat® products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

Note: Several error codes may be present on the monitor because some harnesses are disconnected due to disassembling the boom, stick, and bucket. Be sure these error codes clear after assembling the front structures. Refer to Table 1 for a list of the error codes. Refer to , UENR3618 or , UENR6324 for the detailed procedure.

Removal of Front Linkage

  1. Remove the bucket. Refer to , UENR0194 or , UENR6800 , Bucket - Remove and Install for the detailed procedure.

  2. Remove the stick. Refer to , UENR0194 or , UENR6800 , Stick - Remove and Install for the detailed procedure.

  3. Remove the boom cylinders. Refer to , UENR0194 or , UENR6800 , Boom Cylinder - Remove and Install for the detailed procedure.

  4. Remove the boom. Refer to , UENR0194 or , UENR6800 , Boom - Remove and Install for the detailed procedure.

Installation Procedure

Note: After following the procedures to install “Stick only” or “Boom & Stick”, only the front linkage calibration and the individual linkage sensor calibrations are required.

Installation

Note: If only the stick is removed, proceed to Step 2.

Install the front structure including the rotary position sensor.

  1. Install the boom. Refer to , UENR0194 or , UENR6800 , Boom - Remove and Install for the detailed procedure.

  2. Install the boom cylinders. Refer to , UENR0194 or , UENR6800 , Boom Cylinder - Remove and Install for the detailed procedure.

  3. Install the stick. Refer to , UENR0194 or , UENR6800 , Stick - Remove and Install for the detailed procedure.

  4. Install the stick cylinders. Refer to , UENR0194 or , UENR6800 , Stick - Remove and Install for the detailed procedure.

  5. Use appropriate tooling to install the grade control rotary position sensor group for boom and stick. Refer to , REHS7312, "Instructions for Installing Rotary Position Sensor for Cat ® Grade Control on Certain Series E and Series F Excavators".

Note: The Position Sensor Group mounting requires the center of the Position Sensor Group to be parallel with the center of the boom and stick pins within a 0.4 mm (0.02 inch) envelope.

  6. Install the bucket. Refer to , UENR0194 or , UENR6800 , Bucket - Remove and Install for the detailed procedure.

Calibration

Perform the grade control calibration.

Note: After following the procedures to install “Stick only” or “Boom & Stick”, only the front linkage calibration and the individual linkage sensor calibrations are required. Body sensor calibration is not required.

  1. Perform the front linkage calibration procedure. Refer to , UENR1725, "Cat® Grade Control Depth & Slope for E-Series and F-Series Excavators" Testing and Adjusting , System - Calibrate (Front Linkage Calibration) for the detailed procedure.

Note: The purpose of this calibration is to provide an initial calibration for the system to calculate linkage angles by mapping sensor output signals to default boom angles, stick angles, and cylinder lengths based on nominal print dimensions.

  2. Perform the individual linkage sensor calibration procedure. Calibrate the boom sensor, stick sensor, and bucket sensor. Refer to , UENR1725, "Cat® Grade Control Depth & Slope for E-Series and F-Series Excavators" Testing and Adjusting , System - Calibrate (Individual Linkage Calibration) for the detailed procedure.
