Introduction

The following document is intended as a supplement to the above mentioned training and to be used as reference for standard torques and color and symbol definitions. The symbols referenced in this document do not depict all the symbols that could be used in a VSP, as the following symbols are a sample of symbols that could be found in a VSP.

Visual Service Procedure Colors

Note: Based on SAE J2892 Surface Vehicle Recommended Practice.

Graphic Color Description

Color-coding of targeted components, or sections of a part, is used to communicate a required action.

The descriptions below illustrate the different colors and what is represented when used in a graphic.

(Blue) The primary component of focus for a particular step. Target or primary component to be installed or removed. Installation implied unless otherwise noted with a symbol.

(AVS® Yellow) Description of parts.

(Yellow) Components disconnected, connected, or placed aside for access, but not removed. Highlighted areas of adjustment, inspection, or special attention.

(Cyan) Special tools or other equipment required for use in a particular step.

(Light Gray) Components used for reference.

(Magenta) Any fastener, retainer, or electrical connector used to install or remove the primary component.

Visual Service Procedures Symbols per J2892

Accumulator Discharge - To relieve a fluid storage device of energy.

Air Dryer - Device for removing moisture.

Align - To arrange or to place objects along a line.

Align - Bottom - To arrange or place objects along a line referencing the bottom faces.

Align - Horizontal Center - To arrange or place objects along a line referencing the left to right centers.

Align - Left - To arrange or place objects along a line referencing the left faces.

Align - Right - To arrange or place objects along a line referencing the right faces.

Align - Vertical - To arrange or place objects along a line referencing vertical centers.

Apply Sealant - To apply a sealing material having the specified thickness or diameter.

Attach - To connect together or to fasten on something.

Avoidance Zone Entry

Bad - Defective, of low standard, consumed.

Begin, Start - To start or perform the first act, step, or something.

Boring - To indicate boring for making holes.

Brake ON - Stopping device applied.

Brake System - Mechanical device that inhibits motion by absorbing energy from a moving system

Broom, Manual Sweep - An act of sweeping something with a brush

Charge - To give an electric charge.

Circuit Breaker Closed

Clamp - To hold in position by using a mechanical device.

Clean - To remove foreign or undesired material.

Clean With Fluid - To remove foreign or undesired material using a liquid substance.

Clock, Timer, Time - a mechanical or electrical device for measuring time, indicating hours, minutes, and sometimes seconds, typically by hands on a round dial or by displayed figures

Close - To shut, as in a door. To bring into contact.

Compress, Load - To press together, to squeeze. To transfer weight or force to an object. The weight or force carried by an object.

Compressed Spring Compartment - Flying Objects - A space that contains loaded compressed springs

Connect - To place, join, or fasten in an electrical circuit.

Connect Line (Hose Connect) - To place in a fluid line (hydraulic, fuel, air, brake, refrigerant, etc); to join or fasten together fluid transmission connectors

Cool - To reduce the temperature of an object or system.

Coolant Level - Amount of coolant in reservoir.

Count - Determine the total number of (a collection of items)

Cut - To divide or terminate. To reduce the length of an object.

Diesel Fuel - Any liquid fuel used in diesel engines, whose fuel ignition takes place, without any spark, as a result of compression of the inlet air mixture and then injection of fuel

Discard, Do Not Reuse - To cast aside as useless or undesirable in approved and responsible manner.

Disconnect - To remove or separate in an electrical circuit.

Disconnect Line (Hose Disconnect) - To remove from a fluid line (hydraulic, fuel, air, brake, refrigerant, etc); to separate fluid transmission connectors

Drain - To remove fluid until desired level.

Drill - To pierce or make a hole with a drill.

Horn - An instrument sounding a warning or other signal

Hot Surface - Surface may be hot to touch from operation or heating element

Indicator Light - A device for showing the operating condition of some system

Inflate - To cause to expand by filling with a gas.

Insert - To put in or between.

Inspect - To confirm, inspect, look, or observe to confirm or assure accuracy, conformance.

Install - To set up for use or service

Keep, Store - To retain for reinstallation or reuse.

Keep Hands Away, Do Not Touch - Area or component that hand contact should be avoided

Level - To position a surface in a horizontal orientation. To position in vertical dimension. To align to assist positioning a surface in a horizontal orientation.

Lift-Raise - To raise to a higher position, move, or bring something upward.

Listen, Hear - To be alert to catch an expected sound.

Lock - Restrict access to the full functionality of component or machine

Loosen - To make less tight, set free, or release.

Low Coolant Temperature

Lower - To drop to a reduced energy position. To reduce the level of material in a container. To cause to descend.

Lubricate, Oil - To apply a material to a surface to reduce

Man-Crushing - An object or act that can result in bodily harm from a crushing or falling force

Mark - To make a visible trace or impression on something.

Measure - To determine the dimension, area, volume, or other quantifiable property of an object. A desired quantity of something.

Move - To change position

Nonflammable - Not catching fire easily; not flammable

Obtain Sample - To attain a specified amount of the referenced material or liquid

Off, Inactive - Not functioning or so as to cease to function

Offset - To place out of line

Oil

Open - To unseal or get access to

Operation and Maintenance Manual - Refer to a procedure in a Operation and Maintenance Manual

Paint - To coat the surface of (something) with paint, as decoration or protection

Parking Brake

Persons Required - To specify the number of people required to safely perform the procedure

Position - To locate the desired or intended location

Prohibited, No, Do Not - To prevent from doing something.

Protect - To cover or shield from exposure, injury, damage, or destruction.

Pry - To raise, move, or open with a lever.

Pull - To apply force to cause motion towards the person or machine exerting the force.

Push - To apply force to cause motion away from the person or machine exerting the force.

Radio Off/Inactive

Rearward Moving Machine Alarm - Audio device used to warn of machine reverse motion

Record - To keep an account serving as evidence of an event

Recycle - To dispose of in a manner that enables future reuse of the object's materials

Release, Unclamp - To set free

Relieve - To eliminate the pressure or force on a part or system to reduce a pressure, load, or weight on a device

Remove - To take off or eliminate component

Repair - To restore to usable condition after damage or decay

Repeat - To perform once more. Iterate to do, make, or perform again

Replace - To restore, or return to a former or proper place

Retract - Draw back or be drawn back in

Return - To come back to a former location or condition

Reverse Gear - Gear used to move in rearward direction

Rotate - To turn on an axis. To alternate position or orientation

Rotate - Clockwise - To turn on an axis. To alternate position or orientation, for the purpose of achieving even wear.

Rotate - Counter Clockwise - To turn on an axis. To alternate position or orientation, for the purpose of achieving even wear.

Route - To install a harness, hose, or wire along a specific course or layout along or through a product, to direct along a predefined path.

Runout - Axial - Movement along an axle within limits as part of a mechanism.

Seal - To fasten or close securely.

Seat Belt - A belt or strap securing a person to prevent injury

Separate - To move or be apart.

Service Indicator - Refer to a Technical Manual, Warning, Caution, or Notice

Shock Hazard - Potential electric shock

Slide - To pass along a surface with a smooth, slipping movement. To move along in continuous contact with a surface.

Special Tool - To work with a nonstandard device.

Stop - To end or discontinue motion or operation.

Support - To bear the weight of an object.

Tap - To lightly strike.

Tapping - To cut threads on the inside of a hole, or to restore an internal thread that has been damaged.

Tighten - To make nearer, to fully stretch, without slack, or to apply tension or torque.

Transmission In Neutral - To place the transmission into its NEUTRAL position.

Transmission In Park - To place the transmission into the locked or PARK position.

Transmission In Reverse - To place the transmission into REVERSE for backing up the vehicle.

Turn Signals

Twist - Turn or bend into a specified position or in a specified direction

Wash - An act of washing something or an instance of being washed.

Water, Fluid, Coolant

Water Fill/Empty, Flush

Water Fluid Draining

Weight - A heavy object, especially one being lifted or carried

Weld - To join by heating until liquid portions of two or more pieces of metal in contact with each other and allowing the common puddle to solidify.

Wheel Chock - Wedges of sturdy material placed closely against a vehicle's wheels to prevent accidental movement

Window Washer Fluid - A fluid for vehicles that is used in cleaning the windshield

Work Light - Rear

Unload - To take off force or discharge energy.

Unlock - To release from a secured position.

Voltage - Low - Voltage below what is required for normal operation
