Engine Air Filter Primary Element - Clean/Replace

NOTICE

Service the air cleaner only with the engine stopped. Engine damage could result if the air cleaner is serviced while the engine is running.

The engine air filter primary elements are located on the right side of the upper deck.

  1. Open clamps (3) and remove cover (1) from the air cleaner housing.

  1. Remove primary filter element (2) from the air cleaner housing.

  1. Clean cover (1) and clean the air cleaner housing.

  1. Inspect primary filter element (2) and clean the element. Refer to "Cleaning the Primary Filter Elements" for more information on cleaning the primary filter element.

  1. Inspect the primary filter element after cleaning. Do not use a primary filter element with damaged pleats, damaged gaskets, or damaged seals.

    Note: The primary filter can be cleaned up to six times. Replace the primary filter if the primary filter has been used for one year.

  1. Encase the clean primary filter element and store the element in a clean, dry place until you are ready to install the element.

  1. Install the clean primary filter element.

  1. Install clean cover (1) and close clamps (3) .

  1. Repeat Step 1 through Step 8 for the other primary filter elements.

  1. Engine air filter service indicators (4) are mounted below the air cleaner in the right hand enclosure. Reset the filter indicators by pressing the reset button on the bottom of each indicator.

  1. Start the engine.

  1. Inspect engine air filter service indicators (4) after you start the engine. Replace primary filter elements (2) if any of the following conditions occur:

    • The engine air filter service indicators move into the red zone.

    • The Vital Information Management System (VIMS) indicates that the clean primary filter elements are still plugged.

    • The exhaust smoke is still black after the installation of the clean primary filter elements.

Cleaning the Primary Filter Elements


NOTICE

Do not clean filter elements by bumping or tapping them. Do not use filter elements with damaged pleats, gaskets, or seals. Engine damage can result.


Primary filter elements can be cleaned with pressure air, pressure water, or a detergent washing.

Pressure Air

Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "General Hazard Information" before you use pressure air to clean the primary filter element.

Direct air along the pleats inside the primary filter element and outside the primary filter element.

Pressure Water

Direct water along the pleats inside the primary filter element and outside the primary filter element. The maximum water pressure should not exceed 280 kPa (40 psi).

Do not install the primary filter element until the element is dry.

Detergent Washing

Wash the primary filter element in warm water and nonsudsing household detergent.

Do not install the primary filter element until the element is dry.
