Disassemble Differential
In order to carry out the following steps it is required to remove both universal shafts of the steering axle, resp. stub shafts of the rigid axle. Mark differential carrier with axle housing. Loosen hex. head screws.
With a hoist and lifting device, lift differential carrier out of the axle housing.
Mark the installation position of the bevel gear to the differential carrier housing.
Unlock and screw out the adjusting nut on the bevel gear side.
Remove bearing outer race. Pull off tapered roller bearing.

Repeat steps of figure 3 and 4 on the opposite side.
Mark the two differential case halves to each other. Loosen and remove socket head screws.
Separate the differential case halves from each other and take out all internal components of the differential.
Remove both differential case halves from the axle carrier. If required, loosen locking screws and press bevel gear from the differential case.
Unlock the hex. nut.
Loosen hex. nut. Pull off drive flange and disk.

Press bevel pinion toward the inside, out of the axle carrier.
Lift shaft seal out of the housing. Remove tapered roller bearing.

Drive both bearing outer races out of the housing.
Pull off tapered roller bearing from the bevel pinion.

Assemble Differential
Steps (measuring operation) from figure 14 inclu. to the example are required only if the bevel gear set or the axle carrier have to be exchanged.
Determination of the Shim
Measure dimension A from middle of differential bore to the contact surface in the axle carrier.
e.g. 162.10 mm

Determine width of tapered roller bearing.
e.g. 36.40 mm
Read distance measure on the bevel pinion.
e.g. 125.00 mm
Example
Heat tapered roller bearing to a temperature of 135°C (275°F) and install it firmly against shoulder.
Insert determined shim (e.g. 0.50 mm) and install subsequently bearing outer race until contact is obtained. Install opposite bearing outer race (drive pinion bearing outside) firmly against shoulder.

Insert preassembled bevel pinion into the axle carrier. Assemble sleeve.
Heat tapered roller bearing to maximum temperature of 135°C (275°F). Slide heated tapered roller bearing firmly against shoulder.
Cover shaft seal with sealing compound and install it firmly against shoulder.

Slide drive flange with inserted hex. head screws and installed dust shield upon the bevel pinion.
Assemble disk and fasten it by means of hex. nut.
Torque limit about 250 N·m
(Gives the specified rolling resistance of the bevel pinion bearing of 2 - 3 N·m).

Check rolling resistance.
If the rolling resistance would be too small, tighten hex. nut more.
If the rolling resistance would be too great, loosen hex. nut and adjust again with a lower torque limit.
Secure hex. nut.
Insert thrust washer into the differential case half II and install subsequently side gear. Insert spider with assembled differential gears and washers. Check backlash.
(Nominal value 0.2 - 0.3 mm)
Check backlash with the differential case half I (steps see figure 26).
Introduce differential case half II with inserted washer and side gear into the axle carrier and position it, see figure.
Install differential case half I with inserted washer, side gear and spider assembly.
NOTE: Pay attention to the installation position of the bevel gear in the axle carrier.
Connect both differential case halves by means of socket head screws.
Pay attention to the markings made during disassembly.
Torque limit 86 N·m
Install heated (135°C maximum) tapered roller bearing and place bearing outer race upon it.
NOTE: Pay attention to the different size of the bearings (install smaller bearing opposite to the bevel gear side).

Install adjusting nut.
Repeat steps of figure 30 and 31 on the opposite side.
Adjust Backlash
Install dial indicator in a right angle on the outer diameter of the tooth flank/bevel gear. Adjust adjusting nut on the bevel gear side until a backlash of 0.15 - 0.25 mm has been obtained.
Screw in adjusting nut opposite to the bevel gear side until the differential bearing is without play. Tighten the adjusting nut more for 2 notches. This gives a bearing preload of the differential bearing of 2 - 3 N·m. Check backlash again and correct if necessary.
NOTE: During this step, rotate the differential several times.
Contact dial indicator with the plane surface/bevel gear, rotate bevel gear for at least one turn and read runout.
Maximum admissible runout 0.08 mm.
Cover some tooth flanks of the crown wheel with paint. Roll crown wheel (bevel gear) over the drive pinion in both directions. Take the contact pattern and compare it with page "Examples of contact patterns" on Page 153. Should there be a greater difference of the contact patterns, a spacing error has been made during the installation of the drive pinion.
This error must be absolutely corrected.
Secure both adjusting nuts by means of roll pins.
With a hoist and lifting device, install differential carrier into the axle housing.
NOTE: Pay attention to the markings. Cover contact surface and hex. head screws with sealing compound.
